Sports) The Vikings arrived in Mankato for training camp with big expectations. Coming off a heart-breaking loss to New Orleans in the NFC title game, Brad Childress' team appeared to be missing only one piece to the puzzle—and that was expected to be a short-term situation. Brett Favre, who had joined the Vikings in mid-August in 2009, was again absent in late July when practices began but it was considered more of a charade than a reality that he was debating whether to play a 20th NFL season. Otherwise, all of the Vikings starters from last season were back, with the exception being that cornerback Cedric Griffin wouldn't be ready because of a torn ACL suffered against the Saints. If everything went according to plan, Tarvaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels and... To make room on the roster, the Broncos waived linebacker Baraka Atkins and running back Bruce Hall. The team released the 16-year veteran on Sunday in favor of rookie John Conner. Multiple media outlets, however, report Richardson could be re-signed after Week 1. At that point, his salary wouldn't be guaranteed. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports Richardson is scheduled to make the veterans' minimum of $855,000 this year. ?Each season, there are difficult choices when constructing a 53-man roster and this year is no exception. Saints adjusting to new starters on defense (AP) Malcolm Jenkins fully expects Brett Favre to try to pick on him when the Saints host the Vikings in the NFL's season opener Thursday night. "I'll just have to hold my own," said Jenkins, who'll start for All-Pro safety Darren Sharper. As the Saints open their 2009 title defense, they're not exactly the same team they were a year ago. Favre ready for another shot at Saints (AP) The outcry from Minnesota players, coaches and fans was significant in the wake of the Vikings' overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC title game. Many were furious that the Saints defense was not penalized more heavily for what they viewed as late and illegal hits to Brett Favre throughout the game. Leinart, Houshmandzadeh released as NFL teams trim to 53 (SportingNews.com) Matt Leinart might get a second chance, but for the Arizona Cardinals he was a first-round bust. The team released Leinart on Saturday, marking another career setback for the 10th pick of the 2006 draft and the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner. Another team may sign Leinart as a backup quarterback -- perhaps the Seattle Seahawks, for whom his former college coach, Pete Carroll, is now the head coach. However, Leinart's inability to beat out Derek Anderson for the Cardinals' starting job raises the question whether Leinart will ever be good enough to start... Agent: Bills cut J.P.
